The Canadian Sampler - Meet the Designers - Berene Campbell

It's Month 10 of The Canadian Sampler! We can't believe we have come to the end of this amazing program!

We want to thank you all for being a part of this wonderful block of the month program and for sharing pictures of your blocks. We can't wait to see your finished quilts!

Many thanks to all our wonderful designers for their brilliant work on the blocks. This quilt is truly a labour of love.

The blocks for October are designed by Berene Campbell from Happy Sew Lucky and Christine Baker from Fairfield Road Designs.

“EH!”
 by Berene Campbell

"EH!"

Berene Campbell is a graphic designer and published pattern designer who recently moved from Vancouver to Toronto. She is a member of both the Vancouver and the Toronto Modern Quilt Guilds, and enjoys collaborating and connecting with the quilting community at large. In response to the craziness going on in the world, she initiated “To Boston with Love” peace flags project which hung at the MFA Boston, and more recently the “Quilts for Refugees” project in Toronto. Her goal is to spread a little kindness, in the hopes of helping to make the world a more peaceful place.

Berene teaches quilting in Toronto, encouraging her students to find their own creativity within.

Inspiration for “EH!”

When asked to design a block for this project I wanted to somehow represent the human side of Canada. My graphic designer roots always veer me towards text, so I thought a word design would be fun. A culture's vernacular really sums up it’s every day people. Canada’s unique words say a lot about the salt of the earth nature of it’s people. As an immigrant who didn’t grow up hearing Canadian slang, I find it very endearing. When someone in a plaid shirt cheerily tells you a story ending in “…eh?” you just want to hug them. So this was my inspiration. I ended it with an exclamation mark instead of the usual question mark as I wanted it to be more of a statement of awesomeness, and about how much I love it. EH!

Inspiration for From Sea to Sea

I love half-square triangles and felt that a two-colour block would showcase how great these different sized triangles looked together. The block reminds me of the different contrasts you find in Canada: French vs English, city vs country, hot weather vs cold weather, sea vs land and the list goes on and on. Canada is a diverse, beautiful, accepting, intelligent country and for all of these reasons I’m so proud to call it home. Happy birthday Canada!

by Krista Hennebury

Krista Hennebury is a geologist by training and quilter by choice. She's been quilting for 15 years from her small home studio near Vancouver, B.C. Passionate about sharing her love of quilting with others and growing community through stitching together, Krista began a successful day-retreat business over 11 years ago.

She teaches quilting both locally and internationally. Krista enjoys making traditionally-informed modern quilts using designer prints, solids, linen and retired clothing. Her patterns have been published in Stitch, Australian Homespun, Quilters Connection, Simply Moderne and Quilt Now magazines. Her "Blackbird Fly" quilt won a first place ribbon at QuiltCon 2015 and “Orange Grove” won 2nd place Modern at the Canadian National Juried show 2016. Inspiration for Mill Town

The inspiration for my block initially was a stenciled wall at a Vancouver restaurant. At first glance, it looks like an intricate tile pattern, but closer inspection reveals that it is painted. As I was drafting the block and playing with rotating the rectangular elements, I was thinking about spinning cogs. Even though the design isn't circular, the waterwheels on the sides of historic mills throughout southern Ontario came to mind. When I was growing up in Belleville, Oakville and Ottawa, my family often took Sunday drives to scenic small towns. Many have beautiful ivy-covered stone millhouses with their waterwheels still attached - in fact my husband and I spent our wedding night in the gorgeous Millcroft Inn near Orangeville. I've lived in Vancouver for 30 years and love the West Coast, but I do miss the small towns of Southern Ontario in summertime.

by Sherri Sylvester

Canadian Compass

Sherri learned to love sewing at a young age. When her oldest was born, this love got a bit out of control, in a good way! She has been writing tutorials and blogging at Thread Riding Hood, since 2012 and can’t imagine doing anything else. Sherri writes from Ontario, Canada and loves to promote all things Canadian. She loves working from home alongside her husband, and being able to greet her two daughters when they get home from school. When she’s not sewing, she’s likely reading a novel and snacking on wavy chips and dip!

Inspiration for Canadian Compass

Canada reminds me of forests, road-trips, and lots of land. Thoughts of exploring our amazing country inspired this stylized compass-themed block.

I have fond memories of building Inuksuit with my family, while vacationing on my aunt and uncle’s island in Georgian Bay. At the end of the day we would watch magic moments as these rock cairns transformed into dramatic, glowing silhouettes, the sun slipping into the horizon behind them. I hope you enjoy making this block!
